My love for metals has been a life-long love affair. Shortly before I
was born, my mother took a metals course at Tyler School of Art. One night, while she hammered away on a metalsmithing project, she pointed to her belly and said, "This kid is going to be a jeweler." As it so happened, this is exactly what I have chosen to do with my life.
I began working in metals at the age of twelve and continued through high school. I went on to study at Tyler School of Art, and spent my junior year abroad studying metalsmithing at Bezalel, a university located in Jerusalem, Israel. I graduated from Tyler School of Art with a degree in Jewelry / Metalsmithing (BFA '98). While at Tyler I met Ben, another metals major (BFA '97), who I formed a close bond with. In the autumn of '98 we moved in together and now own a home in Abington, PA. Ben and I decided to adopt a beautiful greyhound, Zoe, who is so dear to our hearts. We can't imagine life without her.
Starting my own jewelry business has always been a dream of mine. I was finally able to make this a reality in '98, when Ben and I rented an apartment with room for a small studio. After a few years we were ready to expand into a larger living space, as well as a bigger home studio. The space has enabled both of us to pursue the development of new designs to add to our jewelry lines.
Many of my designs are influenced by my connection to Judaism and its traditions. Other pieces have developed from my yoga practice, and the spirituality I feel from this practice. I enjoy taking recognizable symbols and
re-working them in my own contemporary style. Some of Ben's work is influenced by his love for simple machines and the mechanisms that make them work. He also loves the natural world, and all of the forms that nature creates, for the sole purpose of functioning in its natural environment. We both fabricate our pieces from sterling silver, 14kt gold, and semi-precious stones, using a variety of methods. |
